If you haven’t heard of Wix, Wix is a popular online website based which makes well designed flash based websites for very low prices.
Many of our clients have asked us about Wix versus paying for traditional design services so I’d like to give an honest assessment about Wix so here it is:
Wix does indeed have the ability to make good looking flash sites if you’re willing to put in a little time. The price is low, generally all you really have to pay for is a domain name.
If you’re a small start up and looking to keep your costs low, Wix is a good alternative to have some sort of web presence. Wix has a ton of templates and the site editor is fairly easy to use with no previous website design experience.
BUT, yes there is a but…
The issue with Flash sites in general is they generally rank very poorly in the search engines. This is because unlike traditional websites, most of the text is embedded in 1 big animated site file. While your site will look nice, when search engine “bots” come to scan your site for content to see what keywords your site should rank for, the “bots” can’t read any of the text on your site. This is why you will see many companies will have a “Flash” and “HTML” site option when you browse their sites.
Wix to keep its software user friendly has even less options for changing your site’s title tags, keyword tags and many other important factors which help your site index and rank well in the search engines.
The bottom line:
Wix is a viable way to get a cheap, nice looking start up website. Great for companies which have no website at all or people on a shoestring budget. However the sites Wix creates have many limitations as far as customizing your site to rank well in the search engines. If you’re looking for a website to gain targeted customers organically and convert sales through search engine traffic, Wix is too basic of a platform to provide the necessary options.
