Finding What Products To Sell

That’s the dream right? Sitting at home, selling things online and collecting a check. But it’s weird, every week I get an email from an online store asking me to promote them and the first thing I ask them is if they have products that people want. Almost everyone says yes. I say “How do you know you have products that people want?” and most people go on to tell me that it has double reinforced steel plates and it’s made in a ISO whatever certified factory and they tell me about the quality. I always say that’s nice, you told me about the features, what about the benefits and still, how do you know people want your product? Most people at this point are lost or they think it’s some kind of trick question.

It’s not a trick question. There’s a ton of people out there with problems and they’re looking for solutions. You need to be selling one of those solutions! You need to be selling what people are looking for, not trying to sell what you think is “good” or what you assume people will buy. That’s a good way to lose a ton of money.

Now that my little rant is over with, here are some easy ways how you can find out what people are already buying. Easy right? It really is.

The first place I look when I’m trying to find out what people are looking to buy is the Amazon Best Sellers list. You can find out the best selling items for every category on the site and Amazon carries just about anything you can imagine.

Second I go to Alexa. Alexa doesn’t highlight individual products but it will show you what websites are getting the most traffic which can be helpful for finding what types of products are selling well.

For online products I use CBEngine. While it only highlights products on Clickbank, you can get an idea of what is selling online and search for separate affiliate programs or even create your own product.

One you have a good list of products to sell, you can add them to your store, website or put together a “mini site” based around those product and start profiting.

Black Friday 2012 statistics are in and online sales were up 26% over last year.

Online retailers cleared $1 billion dollars for the first time ever. Even Black Friday digital download sales were up 29%. Even sales on Thanksgiving day were up 32% and cashed in at $633 million. Sales for the month of November were at $13.7 billion. Crazy numbers.

I hope everyone had a profitable Black Friday and if you were out buying, hopefully you didn’t get trampled by any mobs. For myself I’m home for the holidays in the midwest so I decided not to brave the freezing cold temperatures by going out to the mall at 5am. Online shopping is just too convenient and with almost every retailer offering free shipping, it was an easy decision to stay home. Apparently a lot of people in the US agree.

What does this all mean? It means if you aren’t selling anything in November, you should start thinking about what you can offer consumers because they’re practically running around with their wallets open.

A few weeks ago we highlighted the benefits of having a Pinterest Business page. That was before the announcement of official business pages on Pinterest. We highlight a number of different benefits, the biggest 2 being that Pinterest has cracked the internet’s top 50 visited sites with over 25 million different visitors per month and guess what? A separate survey conducted by Bizrate showed that 70% of Pinterest’s visitors are there for “buying inspiration”. Do you need any other reasons to start a free account?

This week the digital pinboard company has announced that they will officially support Pinterest Business pages starting immediately.

How are company pages different from normal user accounts?

For starters they have a completely different set of terms for using the site. You can read through the official documentation here.

There are also new rules with associating Pinterest’s company logo with your business which you can go through here.

Pinterest also has an awesome informative section which tells you how to get the most out of your Pinterest Business page.

Supposedly more updates and tools are coming. Case studies of how Pinterest helped other businesses experience tremendous grow can be found on their blog.

Instagram announced today that this will be rolling out new “web profiles” for users this week. You’ll have your profile photos, bios and shared images from one convenient URL.

This move probably has a lot to do with Instagram being purchased by Facebook back in April for $1 billion dollars. So far the pages look great while somewhat resembling Facebook’s timeline design and of course it’s yet another cool way to promote your company’s wares at no cost.

You can download the Instagram app from your Android of iPhone smart phones or iPad/Android tablet devices and start an account for free. The pictures will syndicate to your Instagram profile automatically.

Instagram is growing fast. Just this year the image sharing social network has ballooned from 30 million to over 100 million users. If you haven’t started an Instagram yet, get on it and make sure you get the name you want before it’s taken.
